About
Since it’s Frida in Wonderland, Skye represents the Queen of Hearts with a dress adorned with Día de los Muertos skeletons, with sugar skull makeup and holding onto a sacred heart.
She asks the viewer to decide if the Queen of Hearts is good or evil.
Traditionally, the Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll’s novel is a sadist, narcissist, and egoist, however does that make her evil? She rules in a non-sensical manner and truly represents fear so is not neccessarily a good person either.
Imagery
The juxtaposing skeletons inspired from Dia de los Muertos, represent a good side and an evil side
The sacred heart represents love and mercy. The queen clutches in blind faith to her sacred heart seeking its comfort whilst bestowing fear onto her subjects.
The queen wears sugar skull makeup in homage to the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition.
Frame
The dentil crowned modern tabernacle frame trimmed with gold is adorned with Skye’s painted flowers and a hand crafted sacred heart sculpture.
Sugar skulled skeletons decorate the bottom portion of the frame symbolizing good and evil.
Skye hand-sculpted a sacred heart using polymer clay requiring baking and hand painting before adhering to the top portion of the frame.
This symbolizes love and mercy again begging the question is the queen good or evil?
