Future Frida – Deep Dive

About

Scott Listfield generously invited me to join the Sci-Fi show at Gallery1988. As an admirer of his work, I eagerly agreed. I immedately knew exactly what I wanted to create.

This ended up being one my favorite paintings to date.

I kept hearing all kinds of fears about AI, robots, and technology. That led me to imagine Frida in the future and what her world might look like. It came down to nature versus technology. Would her love of animals shift to a robotic cat? Would the bees vital to our ecosystems become technological hybrids?

The natural beauty of the greenery in the background and the floral arrangement on Frida’s head stand in striking contrast to the robotic cat and the pixelated butterfly.

Is it nature that wins? Or can they harmoniously coexist?

Imagery

Skye represents Frida with a signature monobrow; in many cases a hummingbird monobrow.

The thorns around Frida’s neck pays homage to Frida Kahlo’s 1940, Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird.

Skye paints a dramatically long neck to subtlely inform the viewer the surreal nature of the painting.

The pixelated butterfly comments on technology not always being perfect or beautiful; it has it’s own flaws.

The robot cat represents Frida’s love for animals but does technology go too far?

The bunny bees are hybrid, android creatures created in a lab via DNA manipulation and integrated circuitry. Would humankind dare mess with a creature so pivotal to our ecosystem? Perhaps we already are.

Skye focuses on composition using color and theme to move the viewer’s eye around the image subconsciously.

The background foliage subtely uses color to move the eye with similar colored leaves.

The tech around Frida also triangulates eye movement making the painting more than a simple portrait.
